Toke & Travel: If You’re Going to San Francisco, Be Sure to Have Some Flower in Your Bag

San Francisco is the ultimate destination for discovering rich cultures and indulging in the craftiest beers. The city is notably known for its presence in California’s history, and  breathtaking architecture such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the Transamerica Pyramid . After the 1848 gold rush, San Francisco’s population and immigration skyrocketed, making it one of the most diverse cities in the United States at the time.

Fast forward to more than 150 years later. In January 2018, California welcomed the Green Rush. In November 2016, voters approved Proposition 64, legalizing the cannabis for recreational use for adults 21 and older, and consumers were quick to celebrate at their nearest dispensary to purchase their goods.

Visitors to California also have the opportunity to get experience historic landmarks and participate on classic tours on a higher level. So, let’s lift off into the land of lit land and see what there is to do in San Francisco.

Rest Your Head

When it comes to smoking and chilling, where can San Franciscans  safely consume and where are the 420-friendly spots for out-of-town visitors?

Though recreational cannabis is legal in California, public consumption of cannabis is illegal. Under California’s Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MAUCRSA) cannabis must be consumed in a private space. Consumption inside a business is only allowed if a business has a commercial cannabis consumption license. Smoking and vaping outside of designated areas is also prohibited. This is a problem for visitors coming to California who purchase and wish to consume their cannabis.

To navigate these location limitations, travelers can find weed-friendly accommodations with Bud and Breakfast, the short-term rental service for weed. Bud and Breakfast lets you browse through different 420-friendly homes and review the amenities. The online network requires hosts to detail house rules, instructions on where you’re allowed to smoke and whether cannabis products are provided. Once you’ve found your property, get in touch with the host to review the house rules. It never hurts to double-check the rules so you don’t get hit with any surprise fines.

If you’re traveling with a big group or prefer the comforts of home, use a short-term rental app (Airbnb is the biggest) to search for 420-friendly properties. Before perusing through the pages of rental homes, be sure to adjust the filters and select “smoking allowed”. Like Bud and Breakfast, it never hurts to double-check with the host to have them clear up any rules, most important, be aware that “smoking allowed” and “420-friendly” are not the same thing so you might want to re-confirm with the host.

Get the Hookup

In the Bay Area, designer weed is all the hype. Nowhere is this more true than at Cookies SF, the retail home of Connected Cannabis Company (CCC) in the Outer Mission neighborhood. CCC is best known for signature flavors such as Gelato #41. The flagship Cookies SF apparel store is in the famed Haight-Ashbury district.

The Green Door is one of the longest-operating dispensaries in California. Green Door set up shop in 2005, and has maintained a stellar reputation in San Francisco. The dispensary is located in South of Market on Howard Street between Fourth and Fifth street next to the shop’s lounge event space. The Green Door serves recreational users 21 and older, as well as medical marijuana patients 18 and older. Cannabis consumers are also invited to consume flowers wrapped in Zig Zags or use vaporizers in The Green Door lounge. Customers are limited to an hour.

Barbary Coast, also in South of Market, has a wide range of lab-tested cannabis products. Since 2013, Barbary Coast has provided top-tier medical and recreational products in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. Customers can use SkyGlass rigs at the dab bar or smoke in the ultimate cannabis lounge. To access the lounge, patrons must make a donation towards cannabis medicine or product, and present the receipt at the door.

The Apothecarium is another go-to Bay Area dispensary, with two San Francisco locations in the Mission District on Market Street and in the Financial District. It welcomes recreational and medical marijuana users and hosts educational events such as “Cannabis and Cancer 101,” free and open to all. The Apothecarium also offers introductory classes for seniors and cannabis and vendor events from top industry names such as AbsoluteXtracts and Bloom Farms.

Be Prepared

Don’t let long lines hold up your vacation. Pre-order your products on Weedmaps for fast, easy pickup. To confirm the order name, you’ll need to have a state-issued ID or driver’s license present during pick up.

Recreational cannabis consumers may possess up to 1 ounce, or 28.35 grams, of cannabis. Concentrate lovers can carry up to 8 grams of concentrated cannabis. Medical marijuana patients and their caregivers can possess and transport up to 8 ounces of dried cannabis or concentrates and up to six mature plants or 12 immature plants.

All recreational purchases are subject to a 15 percent cannabis excise tax, an 8-10 percent city tax, and a 7.25-11 percent sales and use tax. Medical marijuana patients are subject to pay a 15 percent cannabis excise tax and 8-10 percent city tax.

See the Sights

Take a stroll through Mission District on a Cannabis Walking Tour by Explore San Francisco. On this 2 1/2-hour excursion, explorers will visit and shop at two dispensaries and an accessory shop, followed by a quick visit to a smoking lounge, where guests can enjoy local beers, wines, and appetizers. The tours begin Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $79 per person.

If you’re ready for a break, but still want to see what San Francisco has to offer, sign up for a 420 Bus cannabis tour and choose between the “420 Dispensary and Grow House Tour” or the  “420 Fun Tour.” Once the tour is booked, visitors should bring a photo ID and cash for dispensary purchases. Please note that not all dispensaries accept credit or debit cards. Riders must be 21 years of age to book a reservation.

Experiences While Elevated

Become one with yourself with activities that connect the mind to the body and help relieve stress. San Francisco is full with cannabis-themed events hosted by NeweraSava, and Local Sesh.

Cannabis-related activities are not all this beautiful city have to offer. When you’ve traveled all this way and have made the effort to enhance the experience, take some time to admire the Golden Gate Bridge and commemorate your visit with a picture of one of the most photographed landmarks in the world. Mount Sutro and Bernal Heights Park are also budget-friendly spaces that offer prime hilltop views of the city.

Just because California’s marijuana law prohibits public consumption doesn’t mean locals and travelers can’t enjoy an elevated perspective of the city. Share your insider tips and let us know what sights should to be seen and where the best toke-and-chill places are.
